result as tricks won (Read 46 times)

1 source of irritation & incorrect entry is the term "Result:" when entering scores.
In Australia, we have encouraged players to enter number of tricks only, so 7, 8, 9 etc.
Travellers are marked that way - "tricks" - & our bridgemates (Willoughby) are set up that way.
Yet some players see "Result:" and innocently enter 2 for 2S making 8 tricks.

So can we have a simple software upgrade that dispays "Tricks:" rather than "Results:" ?

"Results" is used as well for numer of tricks as for overtricks/downtricks.
This is one of the options in Bridgemate Pro Control.

No matter how you read it, it is either way a result.
And after a few weeks nobody knows anymore how it used to be.

This is simply not true, it's like saying black is white. Competent, youngish players make these errors rarely but I have been directing bridgemate sessions all year where the elderly clientele stuff this up on a regular basis. That is, they key 3S/S making 3 and are dumbfounded when -600 appears. The bridgemates where I work are set up to record number of tricks taken - correctly in the Australian style - so they should be keying 9, not 3. I get 4 or 5 of these per session. They see "Result" and their brain says "making three" so they key 3. If they saw "tricks" their brain would say "9 tricks".
This should be a simple bug to fix, or a simple option to offer,

The Bridgemate system has 3 ways of notation:
1) American: 3NT 3 (for making); +/- tricks
2) International: 3NT = (for making); +/- tricks
3) "Australian/English": 3NT # (number of tricks)
It's your choice of using one of them. It seems that you prefer the American way.

Over 6 years of experience at 800+ clubs world wide showed that bridge players get used to it pretty fast.

I think your answer confirms shevek's point nicely. "Result" means any of (at least) 3 things. "Tricks" is more specific.
